Gracefully decline a job offer

Gracefully decline a job offerGracefully decline a job offerKeep it professional and therbeies bedrngnishing to be squeamish about when you turn down one job offer for another. Use this advice to explain your regrets. It sounds too good to be true. One highly touted job seeker was hit with a perfect financial services storm job offers from Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and Blackrock - all at the same time. This was the situation facing one client of career coach Connie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio, a partner at SixFigureStart and former head of staffing for Merrill Lynch Asset Management. Is it an embarrassment of riches to be presented with such wonderful opportunities in the wake of a global financial crisis? Sure, but this job seeker also had a difficult task on her hands. She had to turn down two of these three giants and do so in a way that protected her relationships and reputation at each.In an era where very few can afford to burn any bridges, she handled the matter gracefully and ho nestly. In one case, she referred someone else for the position, said Thanasoulis-Cerrachio. In both cases, she explained why it was critical for her to accept the offer she did. Respect was felt all the way around.Respect is the ultimate goal when declining a job offer, said Ginny Clarke, author of Career Mapping Charting Your Course in the New World of Work.No one is taking this stuff personally, Clarke said. Dont lie. If you like another job more, be honest. She suggests contacting the hiring manager quickly and by phone - never in an e-mail - and offer specific reasons why another opportunity is a better fit for you, whether its the hours, drehort or industry trends. In the event that youre taking another offer because its a higher salary, it should be at least $10,000 more per year if youre going to use money as your official explanation. If its within that margin, Clarke suggests emphasizing a secondary reason during the call, such as stability or a clearer promotional path.De clining a job offer by phone this way is more professional and respectful, and provides an opportunity for an open exchange where you could give helpful feedback to the hiring manager. Then, you could follow up with him by sending your contact information at your new job.Theres nothing wrong with saying, Heres where I ended up, she said. Many job seekers feel squeamish about declining an offer after selling themselves during the interview process, but thats not a legitimate concern in a professional setting, Clarke said. It doesnt mean that youre disloyal. Its not about loyalty but it is about integrity. The Reputation IssueAs a recruiter, Clarke once had a candidate who was offered a job and then had a family emergency that meant he wouldnt be able to move there. The man was in a tough spot, but he chose to put family first and quickly explained his sensitive situation to the manager who offered him the job.She respected that about his character - that he made that decision, Clarke said. The man stayed in touch with the company and when his family matter stabilized months later, he reapplied to the company and got the job.Not all job seekers are so graceful. Another one of Clarkes candidates applied for a job without ever planning on accepting it. He was just playing her client in order to leverage a promotion with his current employer. It damaged his reputation, she said. Theres a reputation issue youre trying to maintain.

Opportunities for Working With Children

Opportunities for Working With ChildrenOpportunities for Working With ChildrenDo you find yourself drawn to little kids that you see in the park? Are you someone who gets called frequently to babysit because the kids just love to be around you? Do you have a little brother, sister, niece, or nephew that you enjoy spending time with and teaching them things that you enjoy? If so, then a career working with children may be the right one for you. There are many opportunities available for college students interested in working with kids. Students with an interest in education, counseling, social work, music, art, science, and museums, can find many internships and summer jobs available right in their own communities. Summer recreation programs offer students a chance to work with young children in the areas of art, sports, music, as well as providing opportunities for leading day trips to local historical sites and areas of interest.?? Summer camps are also a good way to gain experienc e working with children of all ages. There are many day and overnight camps available for children with special interests and needs. College students possessing a special talent may apply to camps to teach children a variety of skills. If you possess talents in the arts or music, what better way to use your talent than to share it and teach it to someone else? Overnight camps are great experiences for students interested in pursuing a career in education or psychology since children need ongoing support while they are living away from home. Many schools offer summer programs and seek college students to assist teachers. unterstellung experiences are excellent resume builders for anyone interested in going into education. Many museums also offer educational programs and provide learning experiences for children. In our college, we offer students an opportunity to work in the childcare center on campus as a way to get hands-on experience working with preschoolers. Students interested in psychology, counseling, sociology, or social work may find internship opportunities at an agency that deals with improving the welfare, health, and safety of children. These experiences offer an opportunity to gain exposure in any of these areas of interest and provides relevant work experience for those who do go on to pursue a career in one of these career fields. For those students interested in traveling and gaining exposure to a different culture, there are many opportunities available for teaching abroad and for working for families who are looking for live in assistance. Being an au pair in a foreign country can provide unique experiences while spending time in a new culture and developing or improving on your foreign language skills. Working with children can be enormously satisfying, but it is not for everyone. If you know you love children, getting an internship or job in one of these areas is probably for you. If you are not sure, it is critical that you get some expos ure working with children prior to making a career decision. Its also a good decision to work with different age groups to learn which group you enjoy most. Some students find that they just love preschool, but have no interest in working with children at the elementary level while others enjoy high school, but dont want to work with young children on a daily basis but, ironically, I dont find many students who opt to work with junior high students, and maybe thats because it brings them back to a time in their own life, that they rather not remember.

ASME Press Releases Two New Volunteer-Supported Books

ASME Press Releases Two New Volunteer-Supported Books ASME Press Releases Two New Volunteer-Supported Books ASME Press Releases Two New Volunteer-Supported BooksTwo publications produced with the help of the Societys volunteers - a new third edition of the popular ASME Steam Tables manuals and the first in a series of books covering computers and information in engineering research - are among the latest releases from the ASME Press technical publishing imprint. The recently released ASME International Steam Tables for Industrial Use, Third Edition was prepared by William T. Parry, James C. Bellows, John S. Gallagher, Allan H. Harvey and Richard D. Harwood on behalf of the ASME Research and Technology Committee on Water and Steam in Thermal Systems, Subcommittee on Properties of Steam. First published in 1999, the ASME International Steam Tables for Industrial Use is based on the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) Industrial Formulation 1997 for the Thermodynamic Properties of Water and Steam, which the association has adopted as an international standard. The main update for the new 292-page third edition is the incorporation of the new IAPWS formulation adopted in 2011 for the thermal conductivity of water and steam. The new formulation is reflected in new Tables S-9, S-10, U-9, and U-10, as well as the new Figures S-4, S-5, U-4, and U-5 and a rechnungsprfung of Appendix B. The thermodynamic property information is unchanged from the second edition. The authors also made minor updates to some of the background text and references. ASME Press will publish a second volunteer-supported publication within the next few weeks. The new book, Advances in Computers and Information in Engineering Research, Volume 1, is the first in a series of books intended to disseminate advances in computers and information in engineering research, particularly by researchers who are members of ASMEs Computers and Information in Engineering (CIE ) teilen. Each volume of the Advances in Computers and Information in Engineering Research series will focus on new developments in computational methods, algorithms, tools and processes research that have been reported at recent CIE Division annual conferences. The books, which will be published in print and e-book formats, will focus on critical engineering issues related to areas of interest to the CIE Division technical committees, such as advanced modeling and simulation computer-aided product and process development systems engineering, information and knowledge management and virtual environments and systems. The 620-page first volume consists of 21 research papers covering a wide-ranging selection of CIE-related topics, including process planning for computer-aided nanomanufacturing large-scale topology optimization for high-performance computers advances in nearest-nodes finite element method hybrid design tools for design and engineering processing interactive virtual proto typing for improving consumer product design and manufacturing capability knowledge modeling for intelligent manufacturing systems.According to the editorial board for the series - John Michopoulos, David Rosen, Chris Paredis and Judy Vance - a new volume is expected to be published every three to five years.
